The Dream
What if you could make your own skis, exactly the way you want them? That's what ski buddies Jani and Ilkka started thinking about in 2009. They had moved from park skiing to off-piste, and the characteristics of the equipment started to interest them more and more. They learned the basics from a folk high school course and from Google. The first workshop was set up in a garage in Puuppola, Jyväskylä.
The Company
The first skis were completed, and we got to test them on the local slopes of Riihivuori. Experience was gained and skis built mainly for own use, the quality and processes improving with each prototype. Soon, others in the lift lines began asking about the unique wooden skis. Starting our own business was the next step, and Puuppolan Suksi Oy was founded in February 2016. The more professional workshop gradually took shape in Palokka, Jyväskylä, and the growing hobby enabled a full-time job. The ski collection was refined and expanded. The Kelo downhill ski was launched in 2019 and soon became PUSU's most commercially successful model.
The Development
The development cooperation with Spinnova that started at the turn of the new decade led to the introduction of a new composite structure in 2021, first in the Abisko model and immediately after in the new all-mountain ski Loska. The innovative and ecological Loska was awarded the ISPO Award in the sports equipment industry in Munich 2022, a kind of Holy Grail in sports equipment manufacturing and a big milestone for PUSU! In the summer of the same year, we moved to new, larger premises in Vuontee, Laukaa.
Principle
From the very beginning, we have set out to create the best possible downhill skis, as ecologically as possible. When making a ski, every detail has an impact, and there are an infinite number of these details. In the end, our basic principle is simple: high-quality and organic raw materials create the most stylish and sustainable solutions, both from the point of view of nature and the user.
