In the internationally recognized ISPO competition for sports and outdoor gear, PUSU and Spinnova's premium skis have excelled both in test skiing and laboratory measurements. According to recent test results, skis reinforced with SPINNOVA® fibers dampen vibrations more than 50% faster than traditional fiberglass skis. Spinnova debuted with PUSU in the composite market in November 2021.
The positive feedback from test skiers on the excellent skiing properties of PUSU x SPINNOVA® skis has been confirmed by measurements conducted at Tampere University’s laboratory. The test results showed that these skis can dampen vibrations more than 50% faster compared to those reinforced with fiberglass. Improved damping characteristics offer a better feel and reliability compared to fiberglass skis:
“The skis are exceptionally easy to turn, energetic yet finely dampened. The effortless flexibility of the ski combines with a grip reminiscent of racing skis. High-speed sharp impacts do not unsettle the skis, and the ride feels secure and pleasant even on challenging, hard, and uneven snow,” describes test skier Riku Laakso.
Materials traditionally used to reinforce skis, such as fiberglass and carbon fiber, have been replaced in PUSU’s Abisko and Loska models with the highly ecological and natural SPINNOVA® material. Spinnova’s technology produces textile fibers from certified wood without using solvents or harmful chemicals. SPINNOVA® fiber, made from renewable raw materials, consumes 99% less water and results in 65% fewer carbon dioxide emissions compared to cotton.
“I am proud that PUSU x SPINNOVA® skis are not only eco-friendly but also offer better skiing performance. It’s great that the performance improvements experienced with the test skis have now been validated through measurements. Vibration damping is a crucial feature for skis and significantly enhances the skiing experience,” adds Juha Salmela, Spinnova’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer.
The test results also indicate that skis reinforced with SPINNOVA® material behave differently under stress compared to traditional fiberglass skis:
“Based on comprehensive test skiing, it appears that skis reinforced with SPINNOVA® fibers retain their original properties, such as elasticity, longer than fiberglass skis. Maintaining the original properties of the skis can lead to a longer lifespan,” says PUSU’s founder, Jani Ahvenainen.
Before partnering with PUSU, SPINNOVA® fibers were primarily used in clothing and interior textiles. In addition to performance, using SPINNOVA® fibers in skis makes their production considerably easier and safer compared to handling fiberglass:
“SPINNOVA® fibers behave consistently within the ski structure and are easy to laminate into the composite. Additionally, the fiber does not produce irritating dust for the handler’s skin or respiratory system,” says Ahvenainen.
The ISPO-award-winning PUSU Loska SPINNOVA® skis are now available for pre-order. Previously released PUSU Abisko SPINNOVA® skis are available from PUSU’s online store.
