Ahjo 90

Tight turns. Room to use the shapes of the piste.

Ahjo 90 combines a tight, carved arc with a playful way of using the shapes of the piste. The ski grips decisively into the turn, supports the load and releases in a controlled way into the next arc. Rises in the tip and tail help when there are snow piles or a softer piste edge underfoot. This freecarve piste ski is for you if you want both strong turns and varied lines from the same day on the slopes.

Length

Order now. We’ll confirm the right length with you before delivery.

How to choose your ski length

Start with your own height and where you ski. Then decide whether you value easy turning or stability at speed more.

On piste
A piste ski is usually about 5–15 cm shorter than you.
On and off piste
An all-mountain ski is often slightly shorter than you or about your height.
Soft natural snow
A freeride ski is often about your height or slightly longer.

Between two sizes?

The shorter option is usually easier to handle and turn. The longer one usually adds stability at speed and float in soft snow.

Example: if you are 175 cm tall, the general starting range for a piste ski is about 160–170 cm.

These are general starting points. Your weight, skiing style and the ski’s construction also matter. Even experienced skiers don’t need to pick the longest size.

Ahjo 90

Choose the length by how much agility or support you want in a strongly loaded turn. Ahjo is not automatically sized short like a slalom ski.

About the poles

The pole's shaft is made from Alu 7075 – F56 grade aluminum. We chose this material because it offers the best properties for a touring pole. The advantages of Alu 7075 aluminum are its light weight and durability. The material is also fully recyclable.

PUSU Ahjo 90 -sukset viistosta, punaruskea puuviilu ja kaartuvat päät.

A tight arc, a controlled release.

By freecarve we mean free, tight carving on the edge, where you choose your own line and use the shapes of the piste. The ski naturally seeks a tight turn and answers a strong load with solid support. You can also ski a longer arc or control your speed by skidding, but Ahjo’s strengths show most clearly in a tight, carved turn.

We have not tuned the end of the turn for extra pop. A controlled release makes the ski predictable, so you can prepare for the next turn or use the roller ahead. Push off the roller, hook into the soft edge of the piste and come back onto the edge.

Ahjo started from its maker’s own ideal of a freecarve ski: a tight arc, good stability at speed, predictable behaviour and the chance to use the shapes of the piste.

Room to tip it further.

Ahjo’s 90 mm waist gives your boot room in a strongly edged turn. It helps keep the boot off the snow, especially in soft spring snow, so you can use a low binding without a separate raceplate.

Rise in the tip and tail, or rocker, helps steer the ski into the turn when smooth snow turns into loose snow and piles. Thanks to its shape and damping, Ahjo also feels natural on a piste that has been skied off during the day and on softer edges.

Skis are handmade at the PUSU workshop in Laukaa – a ski being made on a band saw

The feel comes from beneath the surface.

Ahjo’s ash wood core is backed by stiff triax glass and hemp fibres. The construction carries the load in a tight turn, and the hemp adds damping that calms chatter at speed. Overall, Ahjo is stiffer than Kajo and Aava.

The base, made from recycled plastic, withstands impacts and takes wax well. Regular waxing and edge care keep the ski in good shape.

Ahjo was developed from the Ruukki ski. We make every pair by hand in Laukaa and finish it with through-dyed birch veneer. The veneer gives each pair its own look; the feel on snow comes from the core, the fibres and the shape. Other veneers from our collection are also available to order; we confirm price and delivery time before you order.

When to choose another model?

If edge grip on hard, icy pistes matters most, have a look at Piste 75. Choose Kajo 85 if you want a lighter ski that is easier to load and has a wider turn. For deep powder and skin touring, choose another model, such as Aava 95.
